Sodium and bodybuilding. Whether you bodybuild competitively or recreationally, should you fuel your system with a high sodium intake or low sodium intake? Anyone who takes their fitness seriously is an athlete in my book, so this really becomes a sodium for athletes discussion. And as athletes, our focus in the gym should always be on performance first - everything else second. With that truism as our guide, the decision between high salt intake and low salt intake becomes easier. Rather than asking, ‘how much sodium per day to lose weight?’, we should be asking ‘how much sodium per day to maximize training?’
This is because our muscles need sodium to contract, so when it comes to sodium and performance, the last thing we want to do is handicap our performance with severely low sodium levels. Not only will this throw our sodium and water balance all out of whack, but it could cause our aldosterone levels to spike, leading more water to stay in our bodies. Now, if you’re wondering, ‘what is aldosterone?’, then don’t worry! We’ve got a separate video coming out devoted to that very question.
So, in summary, typical sodium nutrition facts are a bit of a sodium myth. Of course, this only applies if you are highly active, and none of this should ever take the place of the advice or opinion of your medical care provider.
And, if you guys are looking for some more information on anything nutrition, you've got to look up Layne Norton, Eric Helms, or Alan Aragon. These guys are all world class.
